+ | On April 4, 2014, pictures surfaced of Del Rey shooting a music video in Los Angeles. She was on set with "Born to Die" and "Blue Jeans" star Bradley Soileau. On May 1, 2014, Del Rey posted a preview of the video on Instagram. On May 6, 2014, an unfinished version of the music video for "West Coast" was uploaded and taken down by Del Rey's label. The next day, the finished video was published. Jenn Pelly and Evan Minsker of Pitchfork Media remarked that at first, it "appears to function in small, romantic gestures—hanging near an ocean, smoking in the back of a car, much like a fashion ad in a magazine. And then, plot twist: It's Lana in flames." |

The video opens with shots of the ocean and driving in LA intercut with scenes of Del Rey and Soileau walking down a beach with friends. Del Rey starts singing as more images of LA are shown. As the chorus comes in, scenes of Del Rey and Soileau playing in the ocean fade into Del Rey in a car with tattoo artist Mark Mahoney. The shot is more glamorous and withheld, he lights her cigarette and Del Rey leans her head on his shoulder. He whispers something in her ear before the second verse where the film returns to Del Rey and Soileau on the beach in a much more casual setting. For the second chorus the scenes of Del Rey in the car with Mahoney return until a shots of Del Rey in flames appears. While in flames she wears either a red dress and or a leather jacket. |

Revision as of 23:47, 4 April 2020
"West Coast" is a song by Lana Del Rey written with Rick Nowels and produced by Dan Auerbach. Written for Del Rey's second major-label studio album Ultraviolence, the song served as the album's lead single and premiered on April 14, 2014 on BBC Radio 1. On April 22, 2014, an alternate version of the song with clearer vocals replaced the original single on iTunes.
Background and writing
On March 23, 2014, Del Rey uploaded a video to Instagram featuring herself lip-syncing to a muted track with the caption “Down on the West Coast they got a sayin..”[1]. On April 3, 2014, Prefixmag made a tweet to their followers encouraging them to listen to Del Rey’s recently leaked track “Meet Me in the Pale Moonlight” and claiming it was a “B-side from Ultraviolence”. Del Rey replied to the tweet four hours after explaining that she “wrote that for someone else 4 years ago …… New single is called West Coast”.[2] The next day Del Rey uploaded a selfie to her Instagram with the caption “West Coast”.
Del Rey and Rick Nowels wrote the song together while improvising with chords in about 20 minutes, however when Del Rey had finished the song, she was unsatisfied with the outcome, complaining that the track was "too structured". The song was originally going to be scrapped from the album altogether, but after meeting with Dan Auerbach, the track was reworked, being changed structurally but leaving the chords.
Composition
The psychedelic rock song "West Coast" is in F♯/G♭ minor set in common time and is notable for its tempo change in the chorus from approximately 123 beats per minute to 50. It is a surf rock song featuring heavily layered vocals, multiple guitar tracks, a focus on percussion and a prominent lead synth in the final chorus. The beginning of the song's slower-tempo chorus interpolates the opening riff from the Beatles' song "And I Love Her", using a similar guitar riff. Del Rey sings in a breathless, sultry style which is exaggerated in the chorus. The song marks a departure from Del Rey's singles from Born to Die and Paradise, as it does not draw upon the use of orchestral strings or stylistic hip-hop beats.
The radio mix is significantly shorter than the original, running at 3 minutes 47 seconds. It does not feature the slower chorus and instead has a constant BPM of 104. It features a light use of strings and slightly altered lyrics. There is no prominent lead synth towards the last chorus and the focus on the percussion is more drawn back. During the final chorus, the first half is stripped to only a distorted guitar and plucked strings for accompaniment.
An official radio edit of the song exists featuring different vocals, different lyrics, and a slightly altered instrumental. The early mix version of the song leaked in lossless format on June 29, 2018. The official a cappella leaked on July 4, 2018.
Critical reception
The song has received universal acclaim from music critics,[3] who commended its "atmospheric" and "hypnotic" production, as well as its maturity. Caryn Ganz of Rolling Stone called the track a "striking departure" in sound for Del Rey, and said its groove transformed her "from chanteuse into frontwoman for a few glorious moments".[4] Kyle Fowle of The A.V. Club named "West Coast" as the album's most accomplished track and "the one song on Ultraviolence that gets the formula of Lana Del Rey right".[5] Nylon writer Liza Darwin deemed the track "silky-smooth" and "total ear candy".[6] In a review of Ultraviolence, Mike Diver of Clash said that in the context of the album, "West Coast" took on greater significance by serving as a fulcrum which balances the record into "leaving a better impression than it otherwise might".[7]
Accolades
"West Coast" was listed as one of the best songs of 2014 by several news media sources. On The Village Voice 's Pazz and Jop critics' year-end list in 2014, "West Coast" was ranked at number 49.[8] Cosmopolitan placed "West Coast" at number 3 on its list of the 50 Best Songs of 2014.[9] The staff of the Music Times also placed "West Coast" at number 3 on their list of the 25 Best Songs of 2014, with De Groot writing, "With the release of 'West Coast,' Lana Del Rey's music finally converged with the complexity and intensity of her persona, and it was glorious".[10] Idolator ranked the song at number 5 on its list of 2014's Best Pop Singles. Bianca Gracie of the website stated that "nothing else on the album sounded quite like 'West Coast'" and described the song as the "soundtrack for endless summers to come".[11] The single was named one of the 50 best songs of 2014 by NME (number 11),[12] Consequence of Sound (number 25),[13] and Stereogum (number 31).[14] Spin ranked the track at number 29 on their list of the 101 Best Songs of 2014, while also deeming it "the lushest and most narcoleptic Top 40 hit of 2014".[15] Joshua Ostroff of The Huffington Post placed "West Coast" at number 12 on his list of the Best Songs of 2014, calling it "perhaps too dark to win the song of the summer title it deserved".[16]
Live performances
Del Rey previewed a verse of the song on the first date of the 2014 leg of the Paradise Tour on April 11, 2014, in Las Vegas at The Cosmopolitan, and two days later she premiered the entire song in a live performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 13, 2014 in Indio, California, a day before the song was officially released. The song has since been included as part of the setlist for the 2014 leg of the Paradise Tour, the 2015 Endless Summer Tour, and at one date of the 2016 Festival Tour. She performed the song in 2017 at the Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival on October 28. In 2018, the song was performed on February 15 in San Diego, California, and again on February 16 in Las Vegas, Nevada as part of the LA to the Moon Tour.

Background
On April 4, 2014, pictures surfaced of Del Rey shooting a music video in Los Angeles. And then, plot twist: It's Lana in flames."
Description

Lyrics
Album version
Down on the West Coast they got a sayin'
"If you're not drinkin' then you're not playin'"
But you've got the music, you've got the music in you
Don't you?
Down on the West Coast I get this feeling like
It all could happen that's why I'm leaving
You for the moment, you for the moment, boy blue
Yeah, you
You're falling hard, I push away, I'm feelin' hot to the touch
You say you'll miss me and I wanna say I miss you so much
But something keeps me really quiet, I'm alive, I'm a lush
Your love, your love, your love
I can see my baby swingin'
His Parliament's on fire and his hands are up
On the balcony and I'm singing
Ooh, baby, ooh, baby
I'm in love
I can see my sweet boy swayin'
He's crazy y Cubano como yo, la la
On the balcony and I'm saying
Move baby, move baby
I'm in love
I'm in love, I'm in love
I'm in love, I'm in love
(Mic check one two, one two, one two, get it girl)
Down on the West Coast, they got their icons
Their silver starlets, their Queens of Saigon
And you've got the music, you've got the music in you
Don't you?
Down on the West Coast, they love their movies
Their golden gods, and rock and roll groupies
And you've got the music, you've got the music in you
Don't you?
You push it hard, I pull away, I'm feeling hotter than fire
I guess that no one ever really made me feel that much higher
Te deseo, cariño, boy, it's you I desire
Your love, your love, your love
I can see my baby swingin'
His Parliament's on fire and his hands are up
On the balcony and I'm singing
Ooh, baby, ooh, baby, I'm in love
I can see my sweet boy swayin'
He's crazy y Cubano como yo, la la
