It was recorded in 2013 and leaked in full on October 1, 2021. The producer is unknown as it is not registered to any music publishing service.
In 2015, NightBird Studios shared a note from Del Rey on their Twitter. She mentions how she loved recording "Unidentified Flying Bill" in their studio.
The song's title was mentioned by a leaker on June 15, 2020. The song was originally speculated to have been recorded in 2011, but was later confirmed to have been recorded in 2013.
A 6-second snippet of the song leaked on October 16, 2020 under the title "This Year's Girl," though this title was later confirmed to be incorrect. The title "Slow Burn" was also rumored, though this was also debunked. The snippet was confirmed to be from "Unidentified Flying Bill" on October 26. A slightly longer version of the previously leaked snippet leaked on November 25, and another snippet leaked the following day.
A snippet of the song's intro leaked on April 1, 2021 which was followed by two more snippets leaking on July 7. The full song leaked on October 1.
