"The Other Woman" is a song written by Jessie Mae Robinson which was originally recorded by Sarah Vaughan, but it was popularized by Nina Simone and covered by Lana Del Rey. It was released on Del Rey's second major-label studio album Ultraviolence, and serves as the closing track for the standard edition of the album.

Background[]

On March 19, 2011, Del Rey tweeted lyrics of the song, leading some fans to speculate whether the song would be covered in the future, which it was later confirmed to be true.

Del Rey talked about the song in a track-by-track commentary for Ultraviolence, saying:

"'The Other Woman' was for me the best way to end the record because I started it with jazz and I wanted to end it with jazz and I felt like with everything that had been said, what you've read and what's been reycled over and over again, like let me give you a little  bit of direction towards what's shaped my life in ways that have even surprised me. And plus, I'm a huge fan of Nina Simone."

An early mix leaked on November 10, 2020.

In early 2022, the song went viral on TikTok, with hundreds of thousands of individual videos made using it, amassing millions of views.

Lyrics[]

The other woman has time to manicure her nails
The other woman is perfect where her rival fails
And she's never seen with pin curls in her hair anywhere

The other woman enchants her clothes with French perfume
The other woman keeps fresh cut flowers in each room
And there are never toys that scatter everywhere

And when her old man comes to call
He finds her waiting like a lonesome queen
'Cause to be by her side
It's such a change from old routine

But the other woman will always cry herself to sleep
The other woman will never have his love to keep
And as the years go by, the other woman will spend her life alone
Alone

Ee-hee, ah-da-ahh, ah-ah
Ooh-hoo, ooh-hoo-hoo
Alone
