"Summertime The Gershwin Version" is song by George Gershwin covered by Lana Del Rey. It is speculated to be the lead single off her upcoming album Americana Standards and Classics, which is coming this Christmas.

Background

The song is the original inspiration for Sublime's "Doin' Time", which Lana covered for her 2019 album, Norman Fucking Rockwell!. It was written by George Gershwin, DuBose Heyward, and Ira Gershwin, and has uncredited vocals by Billie Holiday, who is also one of Del Rey's idols and inspiration. It was composed in 1935, while Holiday's vocals were written and recorded the following year.

The song's existence was revealed through a reliable leaker on November 18, 2020, and Lana announced and released the song on all platforms the following day. Lana used the song as a fundraiser for the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestras, and announced that she will be making donations to both in a move to advocate support for struggling artists during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lyrics

Summertime
And the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin'
And the cotton, the cotton is high

Oh, your daddy, he's rich
And your ma, she's good lookin'
So hush, little baby
Don't you cry

One of these mornings
You're gonna rise up singing
You gonna spread your wings
And take, and take to the sky
Until that morning
Ain't nothing can harm you
With daddy (daddy)
And mammy (mammy)
Standing by

Standing by
Standing by, little baby
Standing by
