"Summer Bummer" (originally titled "So Good") is a song by Lana Del Rey featuring ASAP Rocky and Playboi Carti. It was written and produced by Del Rey, Rocky, Carti, Tyler Williams, Andrew Gradwohl, Boi-1da, Jahaan Sweet and Rick Nowels. The song is featured on Del Rey's fifth studio album and fourth major-label studio album, Lust for Life. It was officially released on July 12, 2017, as the album's third official single.

Background

On June 2, 2017, Del Rey revealed that she and ASAP Rocky had collaborated on a track for the album by posting a snippet of the song on Instagram with the caption: "We made a lot of good ones but I think we picked the best ones for the record".^[1] On June 29, SoundHound revealed another preview of the song^[2] and on July 8, a third snippet of the song surfaced. On July 9, Del Rey posted a video of herself listening to a snippet of the song and revealed that it would be released on July 12, 2017, along with "Groupie Love", which also features ASAP Rocky.^[3]

On July 12, 2017, Zane Lowe premiered both "Summer Bummer" and "Groupie Love" on Beats 1 Radio. Lust for Life was simultaneously put up for pre-order. The song impacted contemporary hit radio in the United Kingdom on July 28, 2017.^[4] An alternate mix of the song was accidentally uploaded on Del Rey's Vevo channel, but was taken down immediately and the album version was uploaded a couple of hours later. The mix lasts 4 minutes and 13 seconds and was registered on PPL Repertoire.^[5] This version can be heard in the first snippet Del Rey posted of the song online. Moreover, this alternate mix was offered as an instant grab song if Lust for Life was pre-ordered from Del Rey's main website. The track had a typo and was called "Summer Bummber".

Two official remixes of the song, one produced by Snakehips and one produced by Clams Casino, were officially released on August 25, 2017 alongside remixes for "Lust for Life".

A snippet of a demo of the song titled "So Good" with different lyrics leaked on April 4, 2018. At a length time of 5 minutes, it contains a different verse, slightly alternate instrumental mix and features only vocals by Del Rey. On July 6, 2018, a snippet of its outro also leaked. The full demo leaked on December 25, 2018. The a cappella of the demo version leaked on January 12, 2018.

Critical reception and composition

Sonically the song is a relaxed trap/hip-hop inspired track in the key of E-flat minor running at approximately 135 beats per minute. Two different official mixes of the song exist, the album version opens with a simple eerie piano chord, while the alternate mix immediately begins with Del Rey singing a line from the chorus.

Harriet Gibsone of The Guardian described the song as a "lazy rap track", noting that "its eerie production and futuristic melancholy [sounds] closer to a track from Frank Ocean’s Blonde than her usual 50s and 60s enthralled shtick".^[6] Rebecca Haithcoat of Pitchfork described the song by saying it was "not a traditional contender for the song-of-the-summer flower crown. It’s sticky, but in a dense and oppressive, not light and carefree, way. Even in Del Rey's songs with a cooler temperature, there's a humidity to her voice, a thickness that slows her tongue. Listless delivery paired with such vivid description is a hallmark of her work, and here it functions as a cocoon you don't want to escape even as you feel the knife's edge of danger. ASAP Rocky and Playboi Carti's contributions feel a little unnecessary, as Del Rey has no trouble carrying a track on her own. Near the end, her voice suddenly jumps an octave and, for a moment, floats sweetly atop the roiling fever dream".^[7] Anna Gaca of SPIN compared the song to Honeymoon's "High by the Beach" sonically, saying it was "like a trap-inspired take" on the song.^[8]

Live performances

Del Rey performed the song live for the first time at her Lust for Life listening party and performance hosted by Spotify at No Vacancy in Los Angeles, California, on July 20, 2017.
