Background and writing Edit

A small incomplete lyric was teased by a leaker on Twitter on October 22, 2016. [1]

The song was described as having heavy strings, giving the song a "horror movie soundtrack" vibe. On July 13, after the album sampler of Lust for Life surfaced online, an instrumental stem snippet was posted by the leaker, confirming that "Something Real" was reworked into "13 Beaches". On August 31, a new snippet was leaked during an Instagram livestream. The leaker stated that he got the song back in May 2016.

The day after Lust for Life leaked on July 19, the leaker revealed the full title of the song and stated that many of the lyrics from "13 Beaches" were kept from the original song and the instrumental from beginning was the same.

According to the album credits for "13 Beaches", the strings were produced by Dan Heath and lyrics co-written by Rick Nowels.
