Lana Del Rey's scrapped third studio album, at one time known as Tropico[S 1] (not to be confused with the released EP nor with the short film released in 2013, both of the same name), is an unreleased studio album thought to have been written and recorded from 2012 to 2013. Many songs that were recorded during this time period were later reworked for Ultraviolence.

Background[]

In late 2012, following the release of Paradise, Del Rey began development of her second major label and third studio album, which would become Ultraviolence, and a short film titled Tropico. While the film was announced on November 8, 2012, with the release of the music video for "Bel Air", it is speculated that around this time, the title Tropico was synonymous with Del Rey's third album.[S 1] Initially, the short film was intended to serve as the visuals for the album, but as development continued, it was decided that the film would be repurposed to use music from Paradise.[S 1][S 2]

Filming for Tropico took place in June 2013, with Del Rey announcing further details regarding the project on Twitter on July 27, 2013.[1] This announcement revealed that the film would feature the songs "Body Electric", "Gods & Monsters" and "Bel Air", indicating that by mid 2013, the Tropico album concept had been scrapped.[S 3]

The music written and recorded between late 2012 and early 2013 is thought to have been considered for inclusion on the scrapped album. Certain tracks, such as "Old Money" and "Black Beauty", were repurposed for inclusion on Ultraviolence, whereas others, such as "Earthquakes" and "I Talk to Jesus", were abandoned.[S 3]
