"Roses Bloom for You" (also referred to as "Roses Blooming") is an unreleased song by Lana Del Rey. It was recorded in early 2017 and was produced by Rick Nowels. The song was recorded for her fifth studio album and fourth major-label studio album, Lust for Life, but ultimately did not make the final tracklist.
Background and writing[]
"Roses Bloom for You" was written during March 2017, and on June 3, Del Rey shared a video on her Instagram profile of herself recording the song in the studio with Rick Nowels.[1] She captioned the video:
- "So many songs left on the cutting room floor but this was a special one I wrote in March called 'Roses bloom for you'. I don't film all my live takes but I'm glad I got this one because I was very excited about the beautiful chords my producer Rick Nowels found for this gem."
On the same day, she also posted another short snippet of the same recording session on her Instagram story. Both the snippets were later removed from her Instagram profile. On December 26, 2017, Del Rey shared another video on Instagram of herself listening to what seems to be a more finalized version of the song featuring different vocal takes.[2]
In an interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1 Radio, Lowe would ask Del Rey about the song, to which she would reply that the song was originally intended to serve as an introduction to the album.[3]
Live performance[]
The song was soundchecked live in a medley with "Chemtrails over the Country Club" before her performance at Rock en Seine in Paris, France, on August 21, 2024.[4]
Cross-references[]
- Roses are mentioned in many of Del Rey's songs, such as "Honeymoon", "Violets for Roses", "Bel Air", "Guns and Roses", "JFK", "Stoplight De-Lite", and the song of the same name.
- Someone having an affair is indirectly referenced in "Cola" and "Other Woman".
- Lilacs are also mentioned in "Off to the Races".
- The phrase "life's a dream" appears as "life's dream" in "Venice Bitch".
Lyrics[]
[Snippet]:
Lilacs in my mind, all the time, are blooming beautifully
Even though some stare and say her last affair went brutally
Well I don't let them rain on my parade, that's not my thing
'Cause I've got love on my side now (Ah)
And I've got nothing to hide now (Ah)
And now life's a dream
