"Put Me in a Movie" (originally titled "Little Girls"[1] and "Ruby") is a song written by Lana Del Rey and produced by David Kahne. It serves as the eleventh track on Del Rey's debut studio album, Lana Del Ray.

Background[]

The song was part of the demo tape, No Kung Fu, which Del Rey sent to various producers in order to find a producer for her album.

A demo of the track, "Ruby", is featured on a 3-track mixtape (alongside "Roller Dirby" and "Kill Kill") that was given to Del Rey's friend and Fordham professor, Mark Naison.

Writing and inspiration[]

The song's lyrics were written by Del Rey herself, and the lyrics have no other admitted author. However, it is apparent that the lyrics are inspired by Lolita, a literary classic by Vladimir Nabokov, as are many of her lyrics including "Diet Mountain Dew" and a song of hers by the same name, "Lolita". The obvious lyrics inspired by the book are mentioned primarily in the chorus, with the lyrics, "C'mon, you know you like (good)! little girls, you can be my daddy.", which relate to the plot. The book's protagonist (Humbert) becomes the step-father of a young girl which he becomes attracted to. However, the song primarily relates to Clare Quilty, who is a doppelgänger of Humbert and kidnaps Lolita during the plot. The lyrics relate to both characters as both act as father figures to Lolita. The title itself, "Put Me in a Movie" relates to only Quilty as he is a child pornographer who takes an interest in Lolita.

Background and description[]

Del Rey created a homemade music video for the song, possibly in 2008, it featured clips of Del Rey herself singing along to the song and clips she gathered from old films, the usual style of her old music videos. There is also a second version that lacks some scenes and it is shorter than the original one.

Cross-references[]

  • The line "lights, camera, acción" also appears in various incarnations in other songs such as "Heavy Hitter", "Daddy Issues" and "High by the Beach".
  • The phrase "little girls" is also used in "I Don't Wanna Go" and "Butterflies, Pt. 2".
  • An old stage name used by Del Rey, "Sparkle Jump Rope Queen", is referenced in the song.
  • Del Rey also tells someone "you can be my daddy" in "Ride" and "Be My Daddy".
  • The phrase "come on" is also used in "Wolf T-Shirt", "Cola" and "Be My Daddy".
  • The lyrics “Lights, camera, acción" in “High by the Beach” are from this song. The following lyrics “I’ll do it on my own” are used in contrast to the lyrics of this song “you know I can’t make it on my own” to show her strong growth.
