"Disco" (also known as "My Only God") is an unreleased song by Lana Del Rey. It was recorded in 2007 and released on ReverbNation while Del Rey was under the stage name Lizzy Grant and the Phenomena. It is speculated to be an outtake from Lana Del Ray.[S 1]
Background[]
A take of the song was recorded on January 14, 2007, at Studio 356, where Del Rey also recorded various takes of "Let My Hair Down", "Oh Say Can You See", "For K, Pt. 2", "Get Drunk", and "Raise Me Up (Mississippi South)". These are known as the Studio 356 Sessions. There were 7 takes of "Disco". On January 23, 2015, two takes and four outtakes of the song leaked, as well as the previously leaked version in higher quality. Del Rey uploaded the first take of the song to her ReverbNation profile in July 2007.[1]
The song was also recorded in a rehearsal session with The Rich Whores, a band that featured her boyfriend at the time, Arthur Lynn. Other songs recorded in the 2007 session include "Trees", "Yayo", "Brite Lites", and "Me & My Boyfriend". On June 13, 2016, a snippet of this version leaked on Instagram. The full session with The Rich Whores surfaced on March 5, 2020.
The first studio version of the song was recorded on August 14, 2007[S 2]. This version of the song was recorded in the same session as the No Kung Fu version of "Get Drunk", meaning the song is likely an outtake of the EP.[S 1] This version leaked on December 2, 2017. A second version of this recording leaked on December 23, 2023. This second studio version of the song was included on a 20-track demo compilation put together by Del Rey in March 2009, titled Demo March 2009.
On November 22, 2017, Del Rey acknowledged the song by posting a video of herself listening and singing along to it on Instagram to promote her merch line for Lust for Life.[2] She was listening to one of the versions from the Studio 356 Sessions.
Live performances[]
There are two known performances of "Disco". Del Rey sang the song on April 6, 2007, at The Cutting Room for the CLEF Foundation Showcase. She also performed "Marilyn" and "For K, Pt. 2". Footage of the performance is available online.
On May 12, 2024, a video cassette tape was uploaded for sale on eBay, described as being the full footage from Del Rey's July 9, 2007 performance at The Cutting Room in New York City. The listing was taken down before being sold. On July 24, the seller uploaded a clip of Del Rey performing "Me & My Boyfriend" to YouTube, while simultaneously announcing a digital streaming event of Del Rey's full set. The performance of "Yayo" has previously leaked, albeit in low quality. Clips of Del Rey performing "Trees" and "For K, Pt. 2" were shared by the seller on July 31, and on August 6, the seller shared clips of this song and "Brite Lites".
