Demo March 2009 is a compilation of demos recorded by Lana Del Rey over an estimated two years, compiled in early March 2009. Most of the songs are a cappella tracks or were produced by Del Rey herself, though a few songs produced by Steven Mertens are included.
Background[]
On December 22 and 23, 2023, the original files of 14 songs recorded from 2007 to 2009 leaked in .m4a format. The majority of these songs had already leaked, such as "Axl Rose Husband" and "Elvis", though unleaked songs "Star Lux" and "Beach Boys" also surfaced. All 14 tracks had metadata featuring an album titled Demo March 2009, with the artist listed as Lizzy Grant. On December 23, an alternate version of "Disco" - also confirmed to be part of the track list - leaked, but not as an original file. On January 7, 2024, five more files, including "Bellevue" and "Jesus Is My Boyfriend", leaked in their original quality.
An insider speculated that the collection could have been something Del Rey compiled in iTunes herself,[S 1] though hidden metadata on the files imply the tracks may have been imported to or exported from a CD. Another insider claimed that the songs originated from a folder that Del Rey had sent around,[S 2] likely in search of producers.
Track listing[]
The track list of songs included in this demo compilation was revealed by an insider in December 2023.[S 1] While the collection of songs was likely not an "album,"[S 3] the songs were seemingly compiled by Del Rey with the intention to distribute to others. Some of the tracks contain metadata that places them in a different 6-track compilation, but with the same album title. Four of these songs help make up part of the "separate" 20-track compilation, of which only 15 were originally accounted for. One track remains unaccounted for,[S 4] though it is possible it is an innocuous error by Del Rey. The aforementioned folder of songs contained many other titles unrelated to Demo March 2009.
