"Burnt Norton (Interlude)" (registered as "Burnt Norton") is a song by Lana Del Rey that is featured as the eighth track from her fourth studio album and third major-label studio album, Honeymoon.

Background[]

The song was registered on APRA AMCOS during July 2015[1] with T.S. Eliot credited as the writer. The song is based on the poem by T.S. Eliot of the same name.

The track was previewed on August 21, 2015, through the "Honeymoon Hotline", a phone line accessed by calling the telephone number on the Honeymoon album artwork, which allowed fans to listen to songs from the album as well as lectures hand picked by Del Rey.

Composition[]

The track serves as a brief interlude for the album with a running time of only 1 minute and 21 seconds. It is simply composed of Del Rey reciting lines taken from T.S. Eliot's poem of the same name, which speaks about the nature of time, and meditates on the idea of fate, with an underlying suggestion that our present experiences are out of our control. Del Rey's narration is recited over an instrumental composed by Keefus Ciancia.

The songs instrumental was used as an interlude during various shows of the 2018 LA to the Moon Tour.

Promotion[]

In November 2015, a 15-second clip of a possible music video for the interlude was teased on Neil Krug's Instagram, it featured footage from the "West Coast" photoshoot.[2] No further information was mentioned or released.

Cross-references[]

  • A rose garden is also mentioned in "Cherry".

Lyrics[]

Time present and time past
Are both perhaps present in time future
And time future contained in time past
If all time is eternally present
All time is unredeemable
What might have been is an abstraction
Remaining a perpetual possibility
Only in a world of speculation
What might have been and what has been
Point to one end, which is always present
Footfalls echo in the memory
Down the passage which we did not take
Towards the door we never opened
Into the rose-garden
