"Blue Jeans" is a song written by Lana Del Rey, Dan Heath, and producer Emile Haynie in 2011, from Del Rey's first major-label album Born to Die. The song was officially released as the album's third single on April 8, 2012.
Background and release[]
Del Rey first released the song and its self-directed music video to her YouTube channel on September 9, 2011. Later that year, it would see release as a double A-side to "Video Games", prior to its own release as the third official single from Born to Die. It would also serve as a B-side to "Born to Die" in 2012.
The demo of the song leaked on June 13, 2012, followed by its instrumental on September 17. The original lossless file of the instrumental then leaked in .aif format on November 22, 2013. The unmastered version of the song would surface from a French promotional CD on August 14, 2016. Some vocal stems would leak on December 23, 2017. The full background vocals, strings, and the Rick James "sing" stems leaked on May 13, 2018.
A stripped version of the song is registered to Harry Fox Agency's Songfile.[2] A laptop demo is also rumored to exist.[S 1]
Composition[]
Musically, "Blue Jeans" is a down-tempo pop ballad with an alternative hip-hop beat and highly orchestrated instrumentation. It is composed in the key of F minor with Del Rey's vocals ranging from F3 to F5. The song focuses on the use of a repeated chorus, which highlights a fragility in Del Rey's voice, and the polarizing hip-hop-influenced beat which contrasts the lyrical and vocal content. The song contains coo-like background vocals from Del Rey herself. It features a sample of the song "Mary Jane (Live @ Long Beach '81)" by Rick James, which is also used in "National Anthem", "Lolita", "Dark Paradise", and "Without You". The instrumental is primarily composed of simple string instruments, guitar, and percussion. The combination of hip-hop and chamber pop featured in the song was a familiar theme in Del Rey's music at the time.
Lyrically, "Blue Jeans" tells a story similar to that of "Dear Elliot", a song from Del Rey's unreleased first acoustic album Sirens. That album introduced the mysterious character K, a past lover of Del Rey's who is either incarcerated or dead. In a 2012 video interview with NME, Del Rey noted that she thinks of "Video Games", "Born to Die", and "Blue Jeans" as a trilogy.[3] Fans have since dubbed the arc of songs as the "K Trilogy".
Critical reception[]
Slant Magazine said that Del Rey "uses her impressive range to dazzling effect on 'Blue Jeans', comparing her delinquent lover to both cancer and her favorite sweater in what seems like one swooning breath".[4] NME noted that the song's "lush Chris Isaak shades shimmer like sea-spume on Helena Christensen’s naked thighs as Del Rey longs for her James Dean."[5] Sputnikmusic remarked that the song is reminiscent of music featured in Quentin Tarantino films and named it one of the best songs on the album.[6] Philip Cosores of Beats Per Minute said that the song "would probably be described by Del Rey as "gangsta spaghetti western," but, aside from its most basic of forced rhymes...it is still a clever spin on genre, sounding unique, even inspired".[7] DOA magazine said of the "lyrics-centric story-telling" song, "...[it] slows [the album] down a bit with a deliberate, but swinging beat...Midway into the song the pace speeds up and Lana crams in a lot of lyrics, keeping the rhymes tight and the emotions high, until it dissipates into a dreamy chorus..."[8] No Ripcord noted that "Del Rey sounds more comfortable when she tries to perform as a tough songstress" in a "dark ballad" such as "Blue Jeans".[9] MusicOMH stated that "'Video Games' and 'Blue Jeans', despite suffering Adele-style levels of ubiquity in recent months, still sound achingly beautiful...like the saddest love songs ever written".[10] Consequence of Sound also remarked that the two songs "inextricably link Del Rey's flaxen locks with starry-eyed classical instruments, providing the aural and visual irresistibility of a good montage".[11] In 2018, Rolling Stone listed "Blue Jeans" as the 35th greatest song of the century, adding, "Del Rey exudes an alluring sense of longing on this slow-melt Cali-goth benediction".[12]
Use in media[]
The song was used in an episode of The CW's Ringer, "It's Easy to Cry When This Much Cash Is Involved", which first aired on February 14, 2012. This usage is often highlighted as a proponent to the launch of Del Rey's career. The Gesaffelstein remix of the song is featured in the 666 Park Avenue episode "The Dead Don't Stay Dead", which first aired on October 14, 2012.[13]
The instrumental of the song was featured in multiple 2012 Nespresso TV spots[14][15][16] and a commercial for the University of Phoenix.[17]
Accolades[]
"Blue Jeans" won Best Pop Video - International at the 2012 UK Music Video Awards, beating out two of her other songs; it was also nominated there for Best Cinematography. In 2013, the song was nominated for Best Alternative/Indie Rock Dance Track at the International Dance Music Awards.
Live performances[]
Del Rey performed the song live for the first time on November 4, 2011, at Ruby Lounge in Manchester, United Kingdom, on the first date of her first official concert tour. It has since been included on the set list for every one of her subsequent concert and festival tours. Alongside fellow Born to Die singles "Video Games", "Born to Die", and "Summertime Sadness", "Blue Jeans" has become one of Del Rey's most-performed songs. While performing this song during the 2019 festival tour and the Norman Fucking Rockwell Tour, Del Rey would approach the audience to take selfies, sign autographs, and accept gifts.
Del Rey made her American television debut by performing "Blue Jeans" and "Video Games" on sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live on January 14, 2012. The performance was met with a large media reaction and backlash. She would go on to perform the song live on French talk show Le Grand Journal on January 30, on Italian talk show Le Invasioni Barbariche on April 13, and The Voice UK on April 29.
The song was a part of a session recorded by Del Rey's live touring band in preparation for her Paradise Tour performances. The full rehearsal session, which featured Del Rey's pre-recorded vocals and were created with the intent of aiding the tour's videographer, leaked on October 15, 2020.

Background[]
The song was released as a double-A side with "Video Games", which had received a video treatment similar to Del Rey's previous style of combining webcam clips with archival footage and film scenes. Stranger Records, who released the single, asked Del Rey to film a video for "Blue Jeans" in a similar fashion. Most clips of Del Rey were recorded in Miami, Florida on July 22, 2011, on the set of Nicole Nodland's Born to Die album cover photoshoot. The video was posted on September 9. An earlier version of the video leaked on September 19, 2013. The insider who leaked it said the following:[S 2]
- "This is the homemade video for Blue Jeans that Lana made before consulting the copyright companies to see what footage she was allowed to put in it. As such, it contains copyrighted footage that wasn't allowed on YouTube, so she had to change it to fit the copyright laws before posting the second homemade video on her YouTube channel."
Description[]
The video begins with a clip of Lawrence Ferlinghetti reading The Lord's Prayer from the film The Last Waltz. Clips taken from videos from songs on Lana Del Ray are shown, as well as video clips of behind-the-scenes footage of photoshoots with Michael Hemy and Heinz Peter Knes. Clips of various locations and people such as Las Vegas strip, rapper Tupac Shakur, and skateboarders are interlaced in between the various shots of Del Rey. The earlier version contains clips of Tyler, The Creator. The video ends with the song fading into Justin Bianco's 2004 single "The Sword of Truth", with Super 8 camera clips of San Francisco, California, and an American flag.

Background[]
Upon official release of "Blue Jeans" as a single, Interscope commissioned Yoann Lemoine, also known as Woodkid, to shoot a professional video for the song. Lemoine had previously directed the "Born to Die" music video. A slightly shorter version of this video with alternate edits and less special effects has also surfaced online.
The album cover of Paradise was shot on the set of the music video by Nicole Nodland.
Description[]
The music video was shot completely in black and white, the only video of Del Rey's to be shot as such.
The video begins with an orchestral intro of the song. Del Rey is shown blurred over a black water reflection, and she herself ripples as the camera slowly zooms in. The video then cuts to Del Rey's lover - played by Bradley Soileau - beside the pool. Intercut shots of Del Rey inside the 1950s-style house and beside the pool, along with Soileau removing his clothes, precede shots of Soileau inserting his fingers into Del Rey's mouth. The video continues with both stars in the pool, along with an albino crocodile. Various shots of Del Rey, the crocodile, and the two lovers kissing eventually merge into a scene with only Del Rey and multiple crocodiles. A scene of Soileau pulling Del Rey underwater is followed by him twirling her lifeless body around the pool. Amongst shots of Del Rey singing, the music video ends with Soileau's hand around Del Rey's neck, submerging the two underwater completely.

Lyrics[]
Album version[]
Blue jeans, white shirt
Walked into the room, you know you made my eyes burn
It was like James Dean, for sure
You're so fresh to death and sick as ca-cancer
You were sorta punk rock, I grew up on hip-hop
But you fit me better than my favorite sweater
And I know that love is mean (Oh-oh) and love hurts (Oh-oh)
But I still remember that day we met in December, oh, baby
I will love you 'til the end of time
I would wait a million years
Promise you'll remember that you're mine
Baby, can you see through the tears?
Love you more than those bitches before
Say you'll remember (Oh, baby), say you'll remember
Oh, baby, ooh, I will love you 'til the end of time
Big dreams, gangsta
Said you had to leave to start your life over
I was like, "No, please, stay here
We don't need no money, we can make it all work"
But he headed out on Sunday, said he'd come home Monday
I stayed up waitin', anticipatin', and pacin'
But he was chasin' (Oh-oh) paper (Oh-oh)
Caught up in the game, that was the last I heard
I will love you 'til the end of time
I would wait a million years
Promise you'll remember that you're mine
Baby, can you see through the tears?
Love you more than those bitches before
Say you'll remember (Oh, baby), say you'll remember
Oh, baby, ooh, I will love you 'til the end of time
You went out every night, and, baby, that's all right
I told you that no matter what you did, I'd be by your side
'Cause I'ma ride or die, whether you fail or fly
Well, shit, at least you tried
But when you walked out that door, a piece of me died
Told you I wanted more, that's not what I had in mind
I just want it like before, we were dancin' all night
Then they took you away, stole you out of my life
You just need to remember
I will love you 'til the end of time
I would wait a million years
Promise you'll remember that you're mine
Baby, can you see through the tears?
Love you more than those bitches before
Say you'll remember (Oh, baby), say you'll remember
Oh, baby, ooh, I will love you 'til the end of time
