Background[]
Lana Del Rey and Machine Gun Kelly first teased the song in October 2018 on Twitter and Instagram Stories. On October 23, Del Rey would post the same snippet of the song.
In an interview with Galore magazine in December 2018, Kelly discussed how the collaboration came about:[1]
- "Lana's presence is so attractive and her grasp on what's real in the world is something a person who always has their head in the clouds (aka me) really needs. She helped to point out that the rawest/simplest form of myself is what connects the most.
- "We smoked, went and grabbed coffee, passed my friends' room who was in there playing these odd chords, and she was like, "What's that? Let's go in there." Next thing you know, we were free styling what ended up becoming the song. Produced, wrote, and recorded all on the spot. It's a song about wanting to be bad for someone good."
In July 2019, Kelly released his new album, Hotel Diablo. That same month, during an interview with Zane Lowe for Beats 1, he said:[2]
- "I erased everything that I did last year. The original album that this was supposed to be, I erased that. I played it, and I got no reaction. I have a lot of honest people around me who were like, 'Yo, this isn't it.'"
Despite scrapping his original album, Kelly held onto track. In an interview with Genius, MGK said:[3]
- "I even had a song with Lana. That's an elite collab. That song - lyric-wise and sound-wise - that song can come out whenever and still be relevant. So if anything, that one's always there. But everything else, I scrapped."
Lyrics[]
[Snippet - Machine Gun Kelly]:
Look, this is gonna end bad for you
I'm gonna go mad for you
I know you wanna be bad for me
But I don't wanna move too fast for you
